Skillman Foundation President and CEO Tonya Allen will discuss ways to improve the effectiveness of nonprofit organizations in “When Good in Not Good Enough” on Tuesday, May 20, at 8:30 a.m. at Lawrence Technological University, 21000 West 10 Mile Road, Southfield.

Allen is the fourth speaker in the Executive to Executive series hosted by the Center for Nonprofit Management at LTU and sponsored by Plante Moran. The cost is $30. Register online at ltu.edu/nonprofit or at the event starting at 8 a.m. outside the Marburger Auditorium in LTU’s Science Building.

Allen will discuss why the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors must anchor their work in innovation and offer new tools that will broaden the mosaic of solution sets for social problems. Her talk will cover data and analytics, market-based principles, creative capital and democratic engagement in problem solving.

As CEO of the Skillman Foundation, Allen has worked on education reform, urban revitalization and public policy with the overall goal of improving the well-being of Detroit’s children. She serves as the architect of the 10-year, $100 million Good Neighborhoods program. She orchestrated the development of a $200 million, citywide education reform organization called Excellent Schools Detroit, and a high-school improvement strategy that has resulted in 15 new college-preparatory high schools.

Executive to Executive is a speaker’s series featuring prominent leaders making a difference in the social sector. This four-part speaker series is sponsored by Plante Moran in partnership with Blender Consulting, The McGregor Fund, United Way for Southeastern Michigan, Michigan Nonprofit Association and the Center for Nonprofit Management at Lawrence Technological University.
