The Henry Ford Trade School Alumni Association has donated $750,000 to create an endowed scholarship fund for undergraduate mechanical engineering students at Lawrence Technological University.

The donation is among the top 10 largest gifts ever received by the University to establish an endowed scholarship, and the largest for scholarships from an organization. Interest income from the endowment will provide need-based scholarship assistance to recipients.

The Corporation for National & Community Service has administered the award since 2006 in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the American Council on Education, Campus Compact, and the Interfaith Youth Core.

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has named Lawrence Technological University among the 361 U.S. colleges and universities to receive its 2015 Community Engagement Classification, which recognizes institutional focus on community engagement.

The institutions that have qualified for this classification represent less than 8 percent of the total number of colleges and universities in the country.

“These are campuses that are improving teaching and learning, producing research that makes a difference in communities, and revitalizing their civic and academic missions,” said John Saltmarsh, director of the New England Resource Center for Higher Education, which administered the selection process. read more

Maccabees Center-15Schostak Brothers & Company, Inc. recently invested $2 million in Maccabees Center, located in the heart of the Southfield City Centre district. Improvements include renovated lobbies, elevators, common areas, restrooms, building exteriors, and energy-efficient HVAC and lighting.

Built in 1985 by Schostak, Maccabees Center is comprised of a three-story and an 11-story, landmark design office complex situated on more than nine acres along the Lodge Freeway. UltraLevel 1UltraLevel, an IT solution provider, moved to its new headquarters in the 123.Net building along Northwestern Highway in February. Recently the company completed renovations making the space more like ‘home’ to its staff, customers and students.

Aside from a few offices within the suite, the entire space has been renovated. New carpet, paint, furniture, kitchen appliances, granite counter tops and so much more really makes the space come to life. The results are a welcoming reception and customer lounge, a fully functioning kitchen and employee lounge, two classrooms for UltraLevel’s IT certification training and testing programs (open to anyone), board room and an additional office and meeting space. read more

Those driving down the Lodge Freeway in recent weeks might have noticed a few changes to the roof of 1-800-LAW-FIRM.

Thanks to the privately funded Property Assessed Clean Energy project, or PACE, 1-800-LAW-FIRM, located at 26700 Lahser Road, recently debuted new wind turbines, carport and rooftop solar panels, high-efficiency lighting, and electric vehicle charging stations.

In 2012, the Southfield City Council voted to become the first city government to join Lean and Green Michigan, a public-private partnership facilitating economic development, the creation of good jobs and environment improvement.

Southfield’s membership allowed for the adoption of the citywide PACE program, which enables property owners to take on voluntary special assessments in order to finance improvements or construction projects that reduce energy and water use or utilize renewable energy sources, such as geothermal, solar and wind power. read more

 Looking for a few New Year’s resolutions to commit to this year? Here are some ideas!

  1. If you or your loved ones did not have an annual physical in 2014, call now and schedule one for January 2015.
  1. If you fell off the band wagon when you put an exercise plan in place, consider just making time to WALK each day. 30 minutes of walking (even in (2) 15 minute periods) can help you move your heart health in the right direction! (Park further away/take the stairs at work/conduct a walking meeting at work)
  1. If you tried to make changes in what you are eating and serving at home and are looking for ways on how to enhance those changes…start now. CLICK HERE for tools and resources for cooking!

The American Heart Association knows that making life style changes is a marathon, not a sprint.  But, if you take one day at a time; make one small positive change a day – you will be taking steps in the right direction putting you and your family on the road to positive heart health!

On this day, employees are encouraged to wear sneakers to work and take at least 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk. Online applications are now being accepted for the next nine-week Michigan I-Corps@LTU program that helps designers, innovators, engineers and tinkerers move their business ideas from the drawing board to the marketplace.

This year’s program will emphasize Design Thinking, a product development process that goes through five steps: empathize, define, ideate, prototype and test. There is a focus on gaining customer input before fully commercializing a product. read more
