“The Role of Technology in Healthcare” is the topic of the annual President’s Symposium at Lawrence Technological University on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Matt Roush, director of communications and public relations for the Engineering Society of Detroit and the former technology editor at WWJ Newsradio 950. The panelists are:

  • Sean Bumstead, chief information officer of Employee Health Insurance Management, Inc.
  • Dr. Glenn Green, associate professor of pediatric otolaryngology, University of Michigan

The United States is joining an international student competition for robot design for the first time this year, and on Saturday, Sept. 27, Lawrence Technological University (LTU) will host the first-ever national championships to determine who will represent their country at the World Robot Olympiad (WRO).

The competition will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at LTU’s Don Ridler Field House, 21000 West 10 Mile Road, Southfield. The public is invited, and admission is free.

The Olympiad started in Singapore in 2004. This year nearly 20,000 middle school and high school  teams from 49 countries are participating. The winning teams from each country are invited to attend the World Robot Olympiad to compete for gold, silver and bronze medals.  read more

To mark the tenth anniversary of one of its city’s premier annual events, The Southfield Area Chamber of Commerce has added several new components to, Taste of Southfield, taking place Tues. Oct. 7  from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Southfield Town Center Atrium (2000 Town Center Atrium). The event features more than 20 restaurants and showcases the diverse culinary offerings throughout the Southfield area. ROTC cadets from Eastern Michigan University formed the color guard for a memorial ceremony held at Lawrence Technological University earlier this year.

Beginning with the spring semester that starts in January, Lawrence Technological University students can enroll in an affiliate Army ROTC program and take the full ROTC curriculum that can lead to a commission as an Army officer.

LTU is now an affiliate of the Army ROTC program offered by the Department of Military Science and Leadership at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. All the ROTC courses will be taught at EMU by Army instructors.

The LTU students will be able to earn a minor in military science and leadership at LTU.

The new ROTC program at LTU comes at a time when the Army is reducing its force and has cancelled more than a dozen ROTC programs around the country. LTU is bucking that trend because of its high proportion of students majoring in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the STEM subjects, according to Director of eLearning Services Richard Bush, the faculty advisor to LTU’s student veterans group.

“While the Army is becoming smaller, it is also becoming increasingly dependent on engineers, scientists and technologists to develop and operate sophisticated weapons systems that improve survivability on the battlefield for the warfighter,” Bush said. “LTU’s focus on STEM likely tilted the decision in our favor.” read more

The 2014 Regional Storm Water Summit hosted by the Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner’s Office, Pure Oakland Water and Lawrence Technological University (LTU) will be held at on Friday, Oct. 3, on the university’s campus, 21000 West 10 Mile Road, Southfield.

Lawrence Technological University has placed in the top 100 colleges and universities nationwide in the 2014-15 PayScale College Salary Report, which measures the earning power of college graduates.

The survey showed that LTU graduates with a bachelor’s degree earned an average of $58,300 early in their careers and $97,600 by mid-career. The average mid-career salary for recipients of bachelor’s degrees from LTU ranked 83rd among more than 1,000 colleges in the survey, up from 122nd in last year’s survey. LTU has the best ranking among colleges in the metropolitan Detroit region. read more

Brooks Kushman Associate Marco Gatti will discuss open source software (OSS) license compliance in the automotive industry at the 2014 Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology Expo on Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. in Novi, Michigan. Gatti’s presentation will provide insights on types of OSS licensing and best practices for staying updated on policies and strategies to maintain compliance.

“It is important to understand exactly which OSS will be included in any product you sell or distribute,” said Gatti. “While the use of OSS provides extensive benefits, it can also become complicated very quickly. Brooks Kushman analyzes embedded modules for open source code, and counsels its clients on how to effectively comply with the licensing terms that apply to that code.” read more

Digital technology has revolutionized scholarship and research in the humanities, and now mobile devices are changing the way future college students interact with literature at a very young age. read more

The deadline has been extended to Wednesday, Sept. 24, for innovators and entrepreneurs to apply for the nine-week Saturday mentoring program at Lawrence Technological University that helps advance new product ideas and establish new business opportunities.

Michigan I-Corps@LTU, established with funds from the Coleman Foundation and the Kern Family Foundation, is part of a statewide program designed to foster and grow an innovation ecosystem throughout Michigan. It provides insights and information about what it takes to successfully commercialize product ideas and meet customer needs.

The program is free for Lawrence Tech students, faculty and alumni. The cost is $500 for teams without an LTU connection. read more
