U.S. Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) will be the first recipient of the Global Citizen Award to be presented by Lawrence Technological University (LTU) on Sunday, Aug. 24, at the start of the new academic year.
The award presentation will be made at LTU’s annual convocation ceremony for new students and their families at 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 24 in the Ridler Field House on the LTU campus in Southfield. It will also mark the conclusion of the annual President’s Global Village Project for LTU students.
Lawrence Tech President Virinder Moudgil established the Global Citizen Award to recognize individuals who have shown great character and leadership in addressing global issues and promoting international and social understanding. This award will be given annually to a person who demonstrates the passion and energy to make a positive impact on humanity through collaborative enterprise and spirit.
After serving 36 years in the U.S. Senate, Levin is stepping down when his term ends in January 2015. He has played an influential role in U.S. foreign affairs as a member of the Armed Services Committee since 1979. He has been the committee’s chairman since 2007.
“Senator Levin’s contribution to global citizenship will be a lasting memory and a testament to many who follow his exemplary leadership,” said LTU President Virinder Moudgil. “We at LTU are proud to be among the first to recognize such a rich tradition of global understanding and cultural awareness.”
Moudgil established LTU’s Global Village Project to help prepare students to be global citizens with awareness and knowledge of cultural, social, financial and political similarities and differences among nations and within the U.S.

He has dedicated his entire public life to safeguard the rights of U.S. citizens, providing opportunities for economic growth and productive life while upholding the place of the U.S. as the leader of the free world,” Moudgil said. “Senator Levin’s accomplishments as a public servant, unquestionable personal integrity and his contributions to world peace and global citizenship will inspire generations to commit to public good.”
