Joseph A. Sullivan, special counsel and director of pro bono programs at Pepper Hamilton LLP, received a Pro Bono Service Award from Legal Services Corporation (LSC). LSC presented the award to Sullivan, along with four other attorneys and three organizations, “in recognition of extraordinary commitment to equal justice” at a ceremony held recently in Pittsburgh.
Sullivan supervises and coordinates all aspects of the delivery of pro bono legal services at Pepper, including monitoring and evaluating the internal reach and effectiveness of the programs, as well as managing the firm’s outreach to bar associations, public interest law firms, business entities and community organizations on pro bono matters. He also actively participates in pro bono engagements.
Sullivan serves on the boards of Community Legal Services, Philadelphia Legal Assistance, the Homeless Advocacy Project, and Inn Dwelling. He also is an active board member of the Pennsylvania Innocence Project and Friends of Farmworkers. Sullivan co-chairs the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Chancellor’s Task Force on Civil Gideon and Access to Justice, and its Delivery of Legal Services Committee. He is a past counsel to the Bar’s Board of Governors and he has served as an independent counsel to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and as a legal advisor to the Philadelphia School Reform Commission.
